December 2nd

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jake sat at the farthest table in the cafeteria, slowly munching away his lunch. His backpack had been thrown carelessly onto the circular table. He sat in one of the six chairs that surrounded the table, the rest all empty. He didn't mind, use to being alone at times. He had friends, there was no doubt there. But there was just something about eating alone that gave him a peace. Jake loved to laugh and talk with his friends but sometimes he loved eating his food in peace. Without the drama and problems buzzing in his ear, directing his attention elsewhere other than his food.

He found lunch an enjoyable time to eat his food and if time, catch up with others. Today was no different besides the fact that the table was empty. He heard a burst of laughter from a table not so far away and could see that his older brother, Jonathan, had a look of triumph on his face. Jake could only assume that he must have told some joke that proved to exceptionally funny. Or they were making fun of him. Either way, his brother's table was filled with people laughing at his ridiculous antics and his was empty.

He sighed, looking down at his half-eaten lunch. He wondered if anyone would be in the audotorium. There was a stage in there and it was quite peaceful. He had learned last year that not many people show up there unless for some assembly or whatever event that was needed to be placed in there. It was there that he practiced on stage his acting abilities. Unbeknownst to his family, Jake had the goal of being an actor, a movie star instead of some egotistical athlete. It just wasn't for him. He took a huge bite out of his apple, wondering if now was the time to go and if he should stay and finish his lunch. Food or acting? It was a tough decision.

In the end, he chose to finish his lunch. He couldn't act on an empty stomach, could he now? A small smile played onto his lips and if someone were to walk by, they would think he was a fool for smiling as he ate by himself. They would have to know Jacob. And not just his family, the athletic Tyler's, but actually know him.

Jacob was a freshman and therefore, he was new to the school. He hadn't gotten lost too many times, but he still got lost. After all, the school was very very big and very very confusing. It was lunchtime and Jacob was very ready for it. He was on the swim team, so he burned his calories and he burned them quickly. So, he was always hungry. He stepped out of the class that he had just been in and looked around. Now...where was the cafeteria...? He thought that he had found it, but he was wrong. It was just another classroom, with a class still in session. "Oh!"he said, surprised. "Sorry...wrong room." He quickly turned and left the room, going back into the hallway. He walked around the corner and lifted his head slightly as he heard voices laughing and talking.

Jacob grinned. He had found the cafeteria and without any help from anyone at all! He felt sort of dumb in thinking so, but he was kind of proud of himself. He went through one of the lunch lines and got a huge sandwich. He was starving! And now, another problem: where should he sit? He didn't really know anyone in this lunch... He looked around and saw a guy sitting alone at a table. "Hey,"he said, after he had reached the table,"is it ok if I sit here?"

Jacob took another huge bite out of his apple, wondering whether he had homework last night or not. And if he did, did he finish it? He was sure that he did. Him not doing his homework would be abnormal especially with the set routine that Jacob had in place. Jake was extremely organized in almost every aspect of his life. While most males were unorganized and had sloppy handwriting, he found himself to be quite the opposite. He was not saying that all guys were sloppy but there were very few that were like Jake.

He looked up at the sound of someone's voice. Were they talking to him? he thought. He looked up to see a boy not much younger than him waiting there. He nodded his head, swallowing a bit of his apple. "Sure," he said. He didn't mind a little company at this moment since he was almost done with his lunch. "I'm Jacob by the way. You can call me Jake though." He stuck out his hand. Mostly everyone called him Jake. It was a much simpler version of his name.

"New here?" he asked him. He hadn't seen the boy around Greengrass Meadows before. But this was only Jake's sophomore year and he was sure that there were more people that he hadn't met yet. He knew a lot of students here for his brother was friends with most of them, it seemed. Then he knew his own group of friends, of course.

Jacob grinned and sat down at the table across from the boy. Now that they were at the same level. he got a better look at the guy. He wasn't a very good judge of age, but he looked as if he were a bit older than Jacob. Not by much, though. He picked up his sandwich with both hand and took a gigantic bite, almost as if he hadn't eaten in days. But, that's just how he was. First of all, he was a teengare and growing a lot. And second of all, he was on the swim team. He swam for two hours everyday, except for weekends.

Jacob swallowed hard and grinned when he heard the guy introduce himself. He reached over and shook Jake's hand. A small laugh escaped his mouth. "Nice to meet you, Jake, I'm Jacob,"he said, grinning widely. After releasing Jake's hand, Jacob took another large bite of his sandwich, chewed and swallowed. He shrugged. "Yeah, sort of. It's my first year here. what year are you?"he asked, taking another bite of his sandwich.

He eyed the new boy with a look of amusement. He must be hungry if he was willing to eat like that. But most boys did, he thought. They were all growing teenagers that needed food on demand and if they didn't get it, they were irritable. It was like girls and their mood swings, he thought. Jake knew that he could prove to be hard to deal with when his stomach was too busy growling at him for food. He couldn't ignore a sound like that was practically pleading with him to feed it.

He nodded after shaking his head. "I'm a sophomore," he answered, taking another bite of his apple. It was finished and all he had left was his half-eaten sandwich. He set the apple core onto his tray, noting that the boy he was talking to had the same name as him. He didn't mind at the least, seeing that this freshmen went by Jacob and not Jake like him.

"So how do you like it here so far at Greengrass Meadows?" he asked him, knowing that with half of the school year almost over, he probably already had a opinion on this boarding school. He was assuming that he had been enrolled here since the beginning.
